Neighborhood Emergency Tree Care

Job description:
Respond to tree emergency calls either throughout the city or within the boundaries you specify. A volunteer dispatcher will call you with fallen or leaning trees that were reported to FUF. In addition, you may notice and respond to emergencies in your neighborhood as you see them. You will go out in your own transport with tools and materials (provided by FUF) and upright the tree, pound in the stakes, hammer in the crossbraces and ties. Only prune as needed to remove broken branches or make the tree light enough to move. This could be done by a strong person working solo or by two or more moderately strong people. This is a good project for members of neighborhood associations as well, as long as there is one main contact person.

Work schedule:
As needed in your spare time, on an ongoing basis. Number of calls depends on amount of traffic or vandalism in the neighborhood. After winter storms, there are usually more calls everywhere. If you won’t be able to respond within a week of the call, or if the tree is too large to work with safely, let the dispatcher know.

Duties:
You will be working on young FUF trees. If the tree is too large to work with safely, let us know.
1. Replacing or adjusting stakes, ties, crossbraces and screens
2. Some pruning as needed to correct emergency
3. Make recommendations on door hanger (provided by FUF)
4. Send FUF a short monthly report of your work (forms provided by FUF)

Work environment:
Outdoors. Traveling under your own power to different sites in the city. Tools and supplies will be provided.

Qualifications:
Ability to lift and safely use metal stake pounder(20lbs). Some knowledge about trees. Have participated in tree plantings or tree care workdays. Staff person will provide training.

Staff person’s role:
Supervision by Tree Care Coordinator.
