The success of Friends of the Urban Forest depends on the participation of volunteers and we would be happy to have you join in whatever capacity you wish. We offer many volunteer opportunities to enhance the urban forest and care for San Francisco trees. Through volunteering you will learn hands-on skills such as tree I.D., proper planting and pruning techniques, plus form connections with community members and their trees.

Our neighborhood tree plantings are a great way to get involved and be introduced to FUF. Volunteers meet at 9 a.m. for a planting demonstration and then split into groups with a Planting Leader. About 40 street trees are planted every Saturday with the help of residents and volunteers. The planting is finished around noon with a potluck lunch hosted by the neighbors, and volunteers are encouraged to attend as the lunch is a way to thank volunteers for their time.

Friends of the Urban Forest was started in 1981 by a small group of citizens (volunteers just like yourself!) who believed that our community would be a healthier and more hospitable place by the presence of more trees. FUF has planted over 35,000 trees and we couldn’t have done it without the help of volunteers.

No experience is necessary to participate. We provide the tools and instruction. See how individuals and groups can help as volunteers.
