  Planting FAQs

How do I help out at a FUF planting?
We plant most Saturdays. Contact one of our planting managers at (415) 561-6890, ext 100 or ext 110.

How do I organize a tree planting?
We depend on neighborhood residents to organize plantings. It's simple, it's fun and we'll help. Call our Community Outreach Coodinator at (415) 561-6890 ext 101.

Can I plant a tree on my own?
While planting through FUF is often easier, you can plant a tree on your own. See Planting Solo.

How can I help take care of the urban forest?
Take care of your tree. Become a FUF tree care volunteer. Organize a neighborhood tree care day. Educate yourself. Express your support of trees to public officials. Protect the trees around you. Report tree abuse. Become a FUF member.

What should I keep in mind in selecting a site for my tree?
Find a site you like. City rules govern the spot you pick. Watch out for overhead utility lines. Avoid underground utility lines. Obtain a planting permit.

What do I need to know to choose the right tree?
Microclimates in San Francisco. Know your soil. Tree size. Tree form. Character, color, special features. Maintenance needs. See Gallery of Urban Trees for tree species selection.

Do I need to water my tree?
Please visit fuf.net/tree_care/watering.html

How should I adjust the stakes and ties?
Every 5 months, you should reposition your ties to avoid their cutting into the cambium of the trunk and/or eventually girdling the tree. To do so, simply use the claw end of the hammer to remove the tie from the stake and move it an inch or two up or down, avoiding branch crotches, along the trunk and rehammer onto the stake. DO NOT HAMMER IN ALL THE WAY, or it will be too difficult to move the next time.
