CHARACTER: Evergreen; round form; moderate canopy.
SIZE: Medium (Height: 25-35'; Spread: 25').
GROWTH RATE: Slow to Moderate.
FOLIAGE: Gray-green, smooth, narrow leaves, 2-3" long.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: Insignificant flowers. "Fruitless" varieties used for street trees. Smooth, light gray bark becomes gnarled as tree matures.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE: Moderate. Early pruning needed to train a good shape; pruning needed less frequently with age. Occasional removal of suckers.
TOLERANCES: Drought (once established), any soil, salt air, gusty or cold winds, fog.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Prefers sun. Can irritate allergies. Some "fruitless" varieties bear a little fruit. Prefers good drainage.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to the Mediterranean. A tough street tree. Commonly planted variety 'Majestic Beauty' bears virtually no fruit.
ALTERNATE FORMS: 'Majestic Beauty' and 'Wilsoni' bear almost no fruit. 'Swan Hill' is less likely to irritate allergies, but can be difficult to procure.
