CHARACTER: Evergreen; upright form; dense canopy.
SIZE: (Height: 20-40'; Spread: 15-30').
GROWTH RATE: Fast.
FOLIAGE: Thick, oval leaves are olive green above, gray beneath.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: Pink flowers, 2" wide, fading with age. Brown seed pods persist.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE:Low. Early pruning will train a good shape; regular pruning needed less frequently with age.
TOLERANCES: Drought (once established), sandy soils, wind and salt air.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Wear gloves and glasses when working around seedpods - can irritate skin and eyes. Needs good drainage.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to South Pacific and Australia; related to hibiscus. Blooms best in coastal conditions. Form is less narrow and erect in old age.
