CHARACTER: Evergreen; spreading form; dense canopy.
SIZE: Medium. (Height: 20-30'; Spread: 20').
GROWTH RATE: Slow to Moderate.
FOLIAGE: Creamy white flowers in clusters 6" across bloom March - May; green, inedible fruit follows (not considered messy). Smooth, medium gray bark.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: Creamy-white flowers in clusters 6" across, bloom March-May. Yellow fruit, 1" across, occasionally forms in thefall. Smooth, gray bark.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE:Moderate. Early pruning will establish and maintain a central leader and train a good shape. Remove inner branches to open crown for light.
TOLERANCES: Sandy soils. Sun or shade.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Trees often lightly rooted at time of planting. Needs good drainage, extra water in sandy soils or windy conditions.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to China. Heavy textured tree with interesting foliage. Attracts birds.
ALTERNATE FORM: Eriobotrya japonica, a close relative, bears loquat fruits.
