CHARACTER:Evergreen; upright form; light canopy.
SIZE: Medium (Height: 20-30'; Spread: 12-15').
GROWTH RATE: Slow to moderate.
FOLIAGE: Medium green narrow strap shaped leaves to 24" long.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: White fragrant flowers _" across, in long branching clusters, bloom April - May. White berries, _", form in fall. Rough, tan bark; trunk flares at the base.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE: Low. Early pruning will train a good shape; regular pruning needed less frequently with age. Reduce multiple trunks and spent flower clusters.
TOLERANCES: Drought (once established), poor drainage, any soil, salt air, some wind, fog. Sun or shade.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Young trees are approximately 3' tall when planted, have pointed leaves in all directions.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to New Zealand. While not a true palm, provides a tropical, palm-like effect. Fragrant bloom. Disease and pest resistant. Ability to survive in most all of San Francisco's microclimates.
ALTERNATE FORMS: Cordyline a. 'Autropurpurea'', which has bronzy red foliage, may be available. Grows slower than straight species.
