CHARACTER: Evergreen, spreading form; dense canopy.
SIZE: Medium to large (Height: 30'-50'; Spread: 30'-40'). Growth Rate: Slow.
GROWTH RATE: Slow.
FOLIAGE: Smooth, ovate-elliptical, lime green leaves (pink, red or bronze when young). Drops foliage heavily in March and immediately regrows.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: Clusters of tiny, yellow, fragrant flowers bloom in May, small blackish fruits follow. Coarse, gray bark.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE: Low. Requires early pruning to train a good form; regular pruning needed less frequently in age. Leaf drop throughout year requires some clean-up.
TOLERANCES: Drought (once established), sandy soil.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Root system substantial, plant in large basins or park strips. Prefers warmer microclimates without prevailing winds. Susceptible to verticillium wilt in poorly drained soils.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to China, Japan. Attractive, natural canopy with little training. Leaves smell of camphor when crushed. Good urban wood for specialty carpentry.
