CHARACTER: Evergreen; irregular, weeping form; moderate canopy.
SIZE: Small (Height: 15-30'; Spread: 15-30').
GROWTH RATE: Moderate to Fast.
FOLIAGE: Dark green, glossy, oval leaves 2-4" long. New foliage has a reddish tinge.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: White flowers in clusters 1" across, bloom February-March. Hard, buff-colored fruit, 1/2" across, occasionally forms in summer, drops in fall. Rough, charcoal gray bark.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE: Moderate. Early pruning needed to train a good shape; pruning needed less frequently with age.
TOLERANCES: Sandy or clay soil.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Prefers sun and warmth. Does not tolerate strong winds or heavy fog. Does best in warm, sunny areas. Subject to fireblight and leaf spot. Leaf spot is most commonly cosmetic, but can be fatal.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to China and Taiwan. Interesting weeping form and some spring flower display. Good tree beneath overhead wires.
