CHARACTER: Evergreen; irregular, upright form, dense canopy.
SIZE: Medium (Height: 20-35'; Spread: 10-20').
GROWTH RATE: Slow.
FOLIAGE: Dark green, glossy, narrow leaves, 4" long. New foliage is light green.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: Insignificant flowers and fruit. Rough, gray bark.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE: Low. Early pruning needed to establish and maintain a central leader, and to develop good branch structure; pruning needed less frequently with age. Some pest control may be needed.
TOLERANCES: Sandy soil, moderate winds, fog, smog, dense shade or sun.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Needs good drainage. Can be susceptible to aphids, scale and sooty mold.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to Eastern Africa. Good tree for 2x3' basins and narrow sidewalks. Successful in shady spots.
