CHARACTER: Evergreen; round form; moderate canopy.
SIZE: Medium (Height: 15-25'; Spread: 10+').
GROWTH RATE: Slow.
FOLIAGE: Gray-green, white underneath, 1-2" long with rounded ends, leathery.
FLOWER/FRUIT/BARK: Small maroon flowers in 1" clusters, bloom in April- June. Green berries follow flowers, drop periodically. Smooth dark gray bark.
MONTHLY WATERING NEEDS: 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
TREE CARE: Low. Early pruning needed to train a good shape, pruning needed less frequently with age. Occasional sidewalk clean-up during fruit drop.
TOLERANCES: Coastal conditions, strong winds, salt air.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Cankers can develop on trunk that weeps sap. This is cosmetic and not fatal.
NOTABLE TRAITS: Native to New Zealand. Tough, pest and disease resistant. Good for narrow sidewalks and coastal conditions.
