Friends of the Urban Forest is a nonprofit organization that helps resident plant and care for their street trees. To get a replacement tree through FUF the property owner needs to fill out two forms: the Friends of the Urban Forest Letter of Agreement, and the DPW Tree Planting Application. They may be found on our web site: http://www.fuf.net/tree_plantings/forms.html. Please send these forms and a check into our office “care of Christian”, he is our Planting Manager. The subsidized cost for a replacement tree is $100. Christian will then contact you about scheduling a replacement tree planting and about the type of trees that best work for your area. Please see our website for photos and information about the types of trees we plant: www.fuf.net/tree_plantings/gallery_of_urban_trees.html.
Please be sure your deceased tree and roots have been removed from the basin before we schedule a planting for we do not have the resources to take out trees or stumps. For a list of arborists we recommend please visit “arborist referrals” under the “tree care” section of our website. If the trees you want removed are still alive you need to get a removal permit from DPW: www.ci.sf.ca.us/site/sfdpw_index.asp?id=33096. This removal permit costs $267 and the process takes at least one month. The City may fine you $1,489 if you remove a tree without a permit.
In the past 25 years San Francisco residents have planted 40,000 trees all around the city with the help of Friends of the Urban Forest. Thank you so much for your interest in increasing our city’s canopy! If you have any further questions please call 561-6890, extension 404.
